Bourdaisière is not just a hotel. It's a monument of the 14th-16th century that is located in the heart of the Châteaux of the Loire in France. Its 25 rooms and 4 apartments have been recently restored and decorated by its owner Prince Louis Albert de Broglie.
Summary of reviewsChâteau De La Bourdaisière, nestled in the picturesque Loire Valley, promises an enchanting experience with its stunning location and exquisite grounds. Surrounded by vast, beautifully maintained gardens, this authentic medieval castle offers a serene and idyllic atmosphere, making it a perfect base for exploring nearby landmarks such as Chenonceau and Amboise. Guests are captivated by the historic ambiance, breathtaking views and the magnificent vegetable garden. The setting is ideal for both relaxing getaways and outdoor events.
The château itself is celebrated for its spacious and elegantly decorated rooms, adorned with classic charm and modern amenities. Many rooms showcase balconies or remarkable views of the gardens, while the unique decor and elegant furnishings contribute to a memorable stay. However, a few areas could benefit from updates to meet modern expectations, such as improved ventilation and additional amenities like TV and wardrobes.
Dining at the château is a mixed experience. Breakfast receives praise for being delicious and plentiful, served in a beautiful sunlit library that enhances the morning's charm. However, some guests note limited variety and find it overpriced. Dinner, often enjoyed in the delightful garden or the unique tomato bar, is appreciated for its romantic setting and flavorful dishes, though some find the quality and portion sizes lacking.

The staff at Château De La Bourdaisière consistently earn high marks for their friendliness, helpfulness and attentiveness, contributing significantly to the positive guest experience. The team is praised for their professionalism and proactive service, ensuring a pleasant and memorable stay.
However, the WiFi service is notably inadequate with weak and inconsistent connectivity that does not extend well to guest rooms.
The outdoor swimming pool set amidst lush greenery provides a refreshing retreat, though it could use better maintenance and facilities.
In summary, Château De La Bourdaisière offers a charming and historically rich experience in a magnificent setting. While there is room for improvement in areas like breakfast variety, dinner quality and WiFi connectivity, the beautiful location, spacious rooms and exceptional staff make it a delightful choice for those looking to immerse themselves in French heritage and elegance. Former Castle Hotel
The initial fortress was built as far back as the 14th century, with only some moats, a corner tower and a staircase remaining from that building. In the early 16th century, it was reconstructed into a country residence and through the ages it changed many owners. In the 19th century, the castle was redesigned once again, this time in a Neo-Renaissance style. During World War II, it was occupied by the Germans, and afterwards it was turned into a military school and later on into a retirement home before becoming the luxury hotel that it is today.
Historic Hotel
In the Middle Ages, the Deputy Governor of Touraine built this fortress and its dry moat. For generations, it was passed down until 1482 when it was bought. Unfortunately, time took a toll on the walls. During the Renaissance, Philibert Babou, the King's Treasurer, reconstructed the fortress and extended the moat. It is here were Marie Goudin, heiress of Bourdaisière and Philibert Babou, had her wedding. It is also here where the King of France, Francis I, stayed during his time in Touraine. Later, France's Minister of Defence fortified the castle and armed it with guns due to the troubled times.

The tranquil and enchanting grounds, featuring vast, beautifully maintained gardens, offer visitors a serene and idyllic atmosphere infused with a rich medieval past. Guests appreciate the castle’s unique and historic ambiance, complemented by breathtaking views and a magnificent vegetable garden. The setting is perfect for outdoor events or simply taking a relaxing break amidst nature.
The château itself is described as beautiful and authentic with spacious rooms that provide enchanting views of the surroundings. The grounds include a lovely café and facilities, making the experience even more delightful. Conveniently located close to Tours and other landmarks, Château De La Bourdaisière combines historical charm with modern accessibility, promising a memorable and picturesque stay for all its visitors.
Breakfast
The breakfast experience at Château De La Bourdaisière has garnered mixed feedback from guests. Many praised the breakfast for being delicious, plentiful and served in a beautiful, sunlit library, providing a pleasant start to the day. Guests appreciated the hearty and generous nature of the meals with some describing it as princely and delightful. The serene and picturesque setting added to the charm, creating a memorable experience for many.
However, there were frequent remarks about the simplicity and limited variety of the breakfast with some guests finding it basic for the price and longing for more local products and options. The service, though convenient, sometimes took longer than expected, which detracted from the overall enjoyment. Additionally, the coffee quality was occasionally subpar and breakfast was often viewed as overpriced considering the quality and offerings.
For a 3-star hotel, the lack of a buffet and in-room coffee/tea tray was noted as surprising. The breakfast was typically served based on orders made the day before and included options were basic with savory choices costing extra. The price of €16 per person was a common point of contention with many guests feeling it didn’t match the quality or variety provided.
Overall, while the picturesque setting and enjoyable meals left a positive impression on some guests, others felt that the breakfast could benefit from improvements in variety, quality and service speed to truly reflect the grandeur of the château.
Dinner
Dinner at Château De La Bourdaisière offers a mixed experience with many guests enjoying the unique setting and flavorful dishes while others find room for improvement. The garden and tomato bar are frequently mentioned as delightful and romantic locations for dining, particularly at sunset. Some diners appreciate the originality and simplicity of the meals, remarking on the nice and enjoyable evening atmosphere.
However, several reviews note disappointment with the quality and portion sizes, describing the meals as not worth the price. There are comments on the limited menu options and the need for reservations. Issues such as meals served on cracked plates and outdated facilities have also been highlighted.
Despite the beautiful garden setting enhancing the dining experience, the overall consensus points to the need for enhancements in both the culinary offerings and the service to match the charming ambiance of the hotel.
Rooms
The rooms at Château De La Bourdaisière are often appreciated for their generous size and elegant decor. Many guests find them beautifully furnished with spacious layouts and modern bathrooms that feature amenities like showers, claw-foot tubs and large mirrors. The immense bathrooms and comfortable beds contribute to a pleasant stay with particular praise for rooms equipped with balconies or offering spectacular views of the park and gardens surrounding the property.
While the elegant and spacious interiors exude an old-world charm, including colorful and unique designs, some areas, especially in terms of furniture and décor, could benefit from a bit of updating. There's a noted absence of certain amenities in some rooms, such as showers, TVs and wardrobes, which might not cater to every guest's modern expectations. Also, a few rooms tend to get uncomfortably hot and could use better ventilation or cooling options.
Guest rooms named after historical figures add an intriguing touch and are usually well-received for their thoughtful furnishings and comfort. However, minor inconveniences like missing coat racks and the occasional bad smell in hallways detract slightly from the experience. Despite these points, the overall setting of the chateau with its beautiful property and grounds, makes for a delightful and enriching stay. The ambiance, combined with the spacious and airy feel of the rooms, leaves many guests satisfied with their visit.
Beds
At Château De La Bourdaisière, guests have shared varied experiences regarding the comfort of the beds. Many guests found the beds to be extremely comfortable and praised the tranquil ambiance that allowed for a restful night's sleep. Several reviews highlighted the comfort of the bedding, describing it as excellent. However, some guests noted that the beds were firmer than their personal preference with a few mentioning they could feel the springs in the mattress. There were also a couple of instances where the double beds were actually two single beds pushed together with mismatched mattress heights, causing discomfort. Overall, while many have enjoyed a good night's rest, some have found the firmness of the beds and certain bedding arrangements to be less than ideal. Nonetheless, the friendly and helpful staff were frequently mentioned positively in relation to addressing bed comfort concerns.
Cleanliness
Château De La Bourdaisière, a grand and historic property, offers a captivating first impression with its breathtaking surroundings. The interior of this beautiful castle is attractively decorated and radiates a cozy atmosphere. Many guests find the rooms to be spacious and aptly furnished, exuding charm befitting an aged castle. However, while the environment and rooms often receive praise for being clean, some reviews highlight inconsistencies in cleanliness.
The rooms, described as very clean by several guests, face criticisms as well, particularly concerning the bathrooms. Issues such as dust, mold and an overall need for renovation are noted. Visitors mention a lack of modern amenities like showers in some bathrooms, which only feature bathtubs. Additionally, the condition and smell of the carpets detract from the overall experience for some, suggesting a need for updates.
The hotel staff is responsive, providing clean towels upon request, which speaks to their commitment to guest satisfaction despite the reported cleaning issues. The general upkeep of the environment is described as well-maintained, quiet and clean, which adds to the charm of this old, sprawling property.
In summary, while the Château de la Bourdaisière impresses with its grandeur and initial visual appeal, there's a noted discrepancy in cleanliness and maintenance that potential guests should be aware of.
Staff
The staff at Château De La Bourdaisière leave a lasting impression on guests, earning praise for their friendliness, helpfulness and attentiveness. Many highlight the warm and thoughtful welcome they received with particular emphasis on the excellent service at both reception and breakfast. Guests note that the team is very friendly, courteous and accommodating, often going out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay.
The competence and professionalism of the staff are frequently mentioned, as well as their proactive approach and good English skills. The receptionists receive special recognition for their impeccable attention and for providing detailed instructions to make the stay more enjoyable.
However, there are occasional remarks about a lack of professionalism and some instances where staff seemed less enthusiastic or responsive to concerns. Despite these few criticisms, the majority of feedback underscores how the dedicated and discreet staff significantly contributed to guests' overall enjoyment of the château's authentic atmosphere. Overall, the staff at Château De La Bourdaisière is commended for their kind and caring nature, making the experience memorable for visitors.
Wi-Fi
Guests at Château De La Bourdaisière have noted that the WiFi experience leaves a lot to be desired. The internet connection is notably weak and inconsistent with many reviews mentioning that it is virtually non-existent in the rooms. Instead, the WiFi seems to work primarily in the main house, but even there, speeds are reported to be super slow and barely usable except in the early morning hours. Additionally, the repetitive need to keep registering for the Wi-Fi adds to the inconvenience. Overall, while the charm and elegance of the château are likely its main attractions, travelers should not expect reliable internet connectivity during their stay.
Pool
Nestled within the enchanting gardens of Château De La Bourdaisière, the swimming pool boasts a pleasant and refreshing retreat for guests. This outdoor pool, set amid a lush green area, offers a delightful experience for laps or leisurely swims. Many visitors have praised its fabulous and wonderful nature, highlighting its good size and class. The poolside features a nice changing room, enhancing convenience for swimmers.
However, the pool is not heated, which might be a consideration depending on weather preferences. Despite its tranquil charm, some guests have noted that the surrounding area, dotted with old, worn-out chairs and limited loungers, could benefit from better design and maintenance. Overall, while the pool provides a lovely and pleasurable swimming experience, some attention to its upkeep and facilities could elevate its appeal further.
